INDIAN HEAD MASSAGE
What is Indian Head Massage?
Indian head massage, also known as champissage, is a combination of pressure points, deep tissue massage on the neck, shoulders, face, and head. This releases tension and stress accumulated in muscles, joint and tissues and improves the condition of the scalp and hair.
History
This type of massage originated in India around 600BC. It originally was used as a grooming technique that was passed through families from mother to daughter. It is part of the practice of medicine called Ayurveda.
It was Narendra Mehta (who was blind from birth), an osteopath and massage therapist from India, who brought this massage to the West. He came to Britain in 1973 and discovered that Western massages did not include the head. He developed the treatment of Indian Head Massage to suit Western tastes and its popularity spread.
